Monitor S.M.A.R.T disk metrics on QNAP with Zabbix
It usually starts with a problem. Something that I thought I had setup, stops working. Sometimes the fix is easy, reboot this, update that software. On this occasion I realize I’m deep in a rabbit hole trying to solve a problem. I’ve recently setup Zabbix and I’ve been integrating it into my home network to monitor various devices and processes.
One device that I want better visibility into is my QNAP NAS. Previously I setup Telegraf, Influx, and Grafana (TIG stack) to monitor performance, but SMART data was not something I had configured. After setting up Zabbix I search for options for integrating into QNAP and was pleased to find a template that used SNMP monitoring. This template collected some of the same information that I was capturing with my TIG stack and also grabbed SMART disk information. I configure the QNAP to allow for SNMP polling and after importing the template and associating it with my QNAP host I was happy to see items that report the SMART status and triggers on the smart values.
Satisfied with this I moved on to other devices to integrate into Zabbix.
