Monitor borg backups with Zabbix
I learned a painful lesson about alerting when my backups failed and I didn’t know it because I had insufficient monitoring. Though my solution to improve visibility by adding a pushover alert to the backup script was easy to implement, it didn’t scale well. If something change in the backup or alerting I would need to revisit every host I backed up to make changes. As I’ve expanded my use of Borg backup for hosts and applications I realized I needed an alert management solution.
I continue to be impressed with Zabbix for monitoring and alerting. I installed it recently and find it’s the missing component to my home network setup. I’ve instrumented my entire network with zabbix using SNMP and native Zabbix agents within a few days. As I’ve been implementing Zabbix, I’ve been revisiting several systems that I want to increase visibility, backups was next on my list.
Install Zabbix agent on Mac OS
I use Amazon photos to sync photo’s from mobile devices to the cloud. I also use the Amazon photos desktop to sync those photos to a local drive on a Mac mini to backup to borgbase as a backup.
